  1. Training good sled dogs takes a long time.
  2. Susan Butcher begins training her dogs as
  3. soon as they are born. She makes sure that
  4. her voice is the first voice they hear and that
  5. her face is the first face they see. Once they
  6. are old enough, Susan takes puppies on
  7. three-mile to four-mile walks. At the age of
  8. 1, each dog gets a doghouse and receives
  9. a special diet.

  11. Then the serious training begins. Susan
  12. takes them on daily runs, sometimes 25
  13. miles or more. The dogs she chooses to
  14. compete in the Iditarod will have run 2,000
  15. miles during training!

  17. Unlike many trainers, Susan treats her
  18. dogs like pets. She lets them come into her
  19. cabin at the end of a dayΓÇÖs training.
